Overview

Orbit's CFO customers were exporting everything to Excel anyway. The product was a glorified data warehouse with a login screen. We rebuilt it around the question every treasurer actually asks: where is my money right now, and what is it doing.

Process

Interviewed 22 treasury teams across mid-market companies. Killed 14 dashboard widgets nobody used. Designed a single "cash position" view as the home screen — every other report became a drill-down. Built a custom chart library because off-the-shelf options couldn't handle multi-currency, multi-entity rollups without lying.

Outcome

Daily active usage tripled within four months. Customer NPS moved from 22 to 61. The "Excel export" button — once the most-clicked element — dropped to the bottom of the analytics. Three competitors have since copied the cash position layout.

Key Decisions

Anchored the entire product on one question: where is my money right now. Everything else became secondary navigation once the core answer was instant. Designed around the Excel export instead of against it. Rather than banning the behavior, we made the in-product view good enough that exporting stopped being reflexive. Prioritized cash position over feature breadth. Treasurers open the tool for confidence, not exploration, so the first screen had to resolve anxiety in seconds.

Conclusion

Orbit proved that adoption is a design problem, not a feature problem. The platform hadn't been missing capabilities — it had been missing a point of view. Once we built around the treasurer's real Monday-morning question, usage followed on its own. The strongest metric wasn't a number we chased, but a habit we removed.
